Great White

  • Hollywood hard rock band Great White happily latched onto the lucrative "hair metal" phenomenon of the late Eighties and very early Nineties, but their sound was much more roots- and blues-oriented than many of their contemporaries.

The band's biggest hit was a cover of Mott The Hoople frontman Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten Twice Shy," but their own "Rock Me" was an MTV staple as well and they've sold around six million albums to-date.

Great White became notorious after their pyrotechnics started a fire in The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island during a performance on February 20, 2003. The pyrotechnics, set off by the band's tour manager, ignited the flammable soundproofing in the club. 100 people in all perished, including Great White lead guitarist Ty Longley and the DJ hosting the night. In August 2008, the band offered survivors and victims' families $1 million in settlements.New York Times: Great White Offers $1M to Settle... (September 2, 2008)
