2010 is the 75th anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With its 850 miles of hiking trails, including part of the Appalachian Trail. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a natural backdrop for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the breathtaking Fall colors of the Great Smoky Mountains.
The elevations in the Smoky Mountains range from 800 feet to 6,643 feet and can affect the temperature based on the elevation differences. With over 9 million visitors each year, it is the most popular U.S. National Park.
The Cherokee people have a nightly re-enactment as a the live show concerning the Trail of Tears. This was the starting place where the walk began. It is the history of the Native American Cherokee tribe being forced to walk across the country to Oklahoma.
There are amusement parks within the Smokies such as Maggie Valley and Dollywood. Both parks have the down to earth feel of the original people that used the land to raise their crops.
Dollywood has been open for twenty five years and has been active in bringing more people to Tennessee to enjoy The Smokies. There are other places to see here like Cades Cove, which is a small community that shows exactly how life was in these mountains up until the National Park was formed and the people lived from pioneer days until the mid 1900's when they were relocated.
With the snow on the mountains in winter, there are chalets and businesses open to allow for snow skiing. There are ski lifts and trails for the skier. This is one park that has something for the whole family all year round.
Seventy Fifth Anniversary of the Park
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is celebrating their 75th anniversary during 2010. This anniversary has given the park workers and visitors time to think back on what it is that makes this park so great for them. The park has been visited by many of these tourists for most of their lie and many of the volunteers and visitors have had family from the area before it became a National Park.
