Great danes are large working dogs. They are typically are spirited, courageous, friendly and dependable. Great danes are considered one of the tallest breeds of dogs and are the official dogs of Germany and Pennsylvania. Despite their size, they have a gentle temperament and are recommended for homes with children.
Health Problems
Due to their large size, great danes commony have joint problems, most specifically hip dysplasia, which is similar to arthritis. They may also suffer from problems with their eyes, heart and thyroids. Great danes that are born completely white are sometimes blind of deaf, much like other breeds of white dogs.
Sports or Activities
Although originally used in hunting, modern day great danes are generally household pets. They require a moderate amount of exercise and thrive on human contact. Although generally not aggressive, great danes may suffer from separation anxiety if left in a yard or home alone for extended periods.
