  • Cleaning

Begin by dusting off the interior and exterior of the clock being careful not to bump the pendulum. Use a good quality furniture polish and a soft cloth and rub into the wood with a circular motion. Use another cloth to rub off the excess polish. Wash the glass with a non-ammonia glass cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the cloth and wipe.
  • History

In 1670 British clockmaker William Clement made the first longcase clock.

In the 1800s, the Jenkins brothers worked at a hotel in Piercebridge, England. The first of the Jenkins brothers died and a grandfather clock made by James Thompson lost its accuracy. When the second Jenkins brother died the clock stopped working.

Henry Clay Work wrote a song called My Grandfathers Clock about the story of the clock. It became popular and the longcase clock became known as a grandfather clock.
