Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars' wanted system has undergone a revision from the typical systems of GTA titles in the past. Not only does the player have to evade the police as much as possible but they must now also disable and impede the pursuit before being rewarded with a getaway. Prior to the release of Grand Theft Auto 3, the GTA series of games was presented in a top-down perspective. The player controlled the character from a camera high above the character's head and the games were entirely 2D.

With the release of GTA3, the series made the leap into a full three-dimensional plane and the camera was situated in a raised manner above the back of the player-controlled character.

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars takes those two styles of presentation and creates a hybrid which presents the world in an isometric perspective that shows off more of the world than the original 2D presentation and utilizes cell-shaded 3D graphics to render the the city. This allows the player to better navigate the world, while still keeping the game well within the Nintendo DS's graphical capabilities.
