The thirteenth game in the series, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS by Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with Rockstar North.
Plot

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of the game's protagonist, Huang Lee. After the murder of Huang's father, his uncle summons him to deliver a family heirloom, the Yu Jian sword, to him in Liberty City. The sword symbolizes their family's right to maintain control of the Triad gangs of Liberty City. A spoiled rich kid and unschooled in the methods employed by organized crime, Huang expects everything to flow smoothly. Upon his arrival, Huang is met by his father's assassin's, beaten, robbed of the sword, driven into the Humboldt River in the backseat of a car, and left for dead. Chinatown Wars takes place in Liberty City's Chinatown and the story focuses on a rivalry between Chinese and Korean gangsters.
The cel-shaded graphics are fully 3D with an isometric top-down camera. Huang Lee
- ] Huang Lee, the spoiled rich son of a Kowloon Triad boss, is the game's protagonist. Because of his father's importance in the syndicate, Huang is a member of the Triad. He is summoned to Liberty City by his Uncle Wu "Kenny" Lee after his father's murder to deliver the Yu Jian sword, a family heirloom, that will secure their family's rightful position as leaders of the Triad gangs. Upon his arrival at Francis International Airport, Lee is hijacked, robbed of the sword, and left for dead. He must retrieve the sword, avenge his father's murder and reclaim his family honor.
Hsin and Chan Jaoming
- ] 73 year old Hsin Jaoming has been the Liberty City Triad crime boss for over twenty years, heading up both the Jaomings and the Algonquin gangs. Hsin is believed to be responsible for several murders and has been arrested on three occasions: 2002 for extortion, 2004 for assault, and 2005 for racketeering. Nearing retirement, his 40 year old son Chan is in competition with Zhou Ming to replace him in this position and feels that he is a shoe-in as Hsin's son. Chan is believed to be the underboss of the Jaoming Family and has been arrested on two occasions: once in 1999 for possession of heroin and again in 2003 for extortion. He is described as a playboy, drug-addled, and too stupid to succeed his father as the leader of the Jaoming Family.
Uncle Wu "Kenny" Lee
- ] Wu "Kenny" Lee is the forty-eight year old leader of the Lee Family who operates out of the Sum Yung Gai restaurant and the uncle of Huang Lee, the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Towards the beginning of the game, Kenny provides Huang with all of his missions. As the leader of the second most powerful Triad in Liberty City, he is one of the leading contenders to succeed Hsin Jaoming as the Liberty City Triad crime boss until he learns of the disappearance of the Yu-Jian sword.
Ling
- ] Ling is a beautiful street-smart girl from Chinatown with deadly skills. Expertly trained in the martial arts and use of multiple deadly weapons, she is Uncle Kenny's master at arms, and teaches Huang the combat skills he needs to survive the streets of Liberty City in addition to supplying him with weapons. Ling is killed within the first few missions of the game and is last seen having her corpse carried away in a body bag.
Wade Heston
- ] Wade Heston is a shady Liberty City police narcotics officer who allies with Huang Lee after Lee saves him in an ambush to find a mysterious FBI agent who set them both up.
Danny
- Danny is a drug dealer who teaches Huang Lee how to deal drugs. Players may purchase an assortment of street drugs from him, e.g., ecstasy, marijuana, downers, acid, heroin, cocaine.
Zhou Ming
- Zhou Ming is the thirty-eight year old leader of the Triads' Ming Family in Liberty City. He is affiliated with Hsin Jaoming and suspected of running local and global counterfeiting operations. He is a contender for the position of Hsin Jaoming's successor along with Wu "Kenny" Lee and Chan Jaoming.
