Grand Theft Auto IV is set in a place called Liberty City. It is set in the current time and the story follows an immigrant that has come to Liberty City to live the American dream. The main character comes to town to help his cousin out of his problems with a loan shark and several other "problems". This soundtrack is actually a series of soundtracks that the player can access and use as you would a regular radio. The car radios features nineteen different radio stations. The creators thought about how much time would be spent in the automobiles during play time, and they realized that there was another option to the music than one simple game soundtrack would provide. They began to think along the lines of radio stations and they came up with nineteen stations so that the player can customize their own music or talk radio background. This was a new concept for game designers.

Three of the stations are talk radio, while the rest play different genres of music ranging from classic rock and hip-hop to jazz and funk. Players can listen to any of the stations while driving a vehicle in the game. Rockstar signed a deal with Amazon.com, allowing fans to download MP3s of many of the songs featured in the game.
