The primary complaint with the initial release of Grand Theft Auto IV was regarding freezing issues in the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV. This typically occurred for players with a 40GB console during missions. Signing out of the PlayStation Network temporary alleviated the issue of having difficulties sending statistics to the social club server.
May 7, 2008 PS3 Patch
The May 7, 2008 patch "prevents Gamespy's servers from being overloaded and therefore reduces the impact on those servers that were causing the game to stutter and lock up." June 23, 2008 Patch
The June 23rd patch addresses the following issues:
- Players unable to enter or exit vehicles in GTA Race
- Scripted vehicles causing game to crash
- Reliability and frequency of PS3 online leaderboard updates
- System hang when moving from Race or Race lobby into gameplay
- System hang when switching teams during countdown in the lobby
- Incorrect high scores in Cops 'n Crooks matches
- Last remaining player in GTA Race and Race now receives $250 reward
- Spectators prevent game completion
- Inability to watch Cops 'n Crooks Round 2
- Lobby countdown timer no longer resets when new players join a game
- Kicked players no longer returned to single player mode
