This page contains information about Liberty City, as portrayed in the video game, Grand Theft Auto IV. Set in a redesigned Liberty City, based on four of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, the total area of the map is smaller than the one in San Andreas. While smaller, the newly designed Liberty City is far more detailed, and the largest individual city in the Grand Theft Auto series.
Liberty City Information
Liberty City was named in reference to New York's Statue of Liberty. Its geography and landmarks are based on four of the five actual New York City boroughs and parts of New Jersey. "Dukes" is based on Queens (Duke and Queen both being titles in British aristocracy), "Algonquin" is Manhattan (Manhattan being a word in the Native American language of the region, and Algonquin the name of an Eastern Native American tribe), "Alderney" is New Jersey (Alderney and Jersey are both British Channel Islands), "Broker" is Brooklyn, and "Bohan" is the Bronx. In GTA 4, the mayor of Liberty City is Julio Ochoa and the deputy is Bryce Dawkins. When the player starts the game, most of the bridges in the town are locked but after advancing in the game they will be unlocked. Trying to pass these blockades will raise the Wanted Level of your character to 6 stars. In Grand Theft Auto IV, Liberty City is inhabited by approximately 8 million citizens.
History
In Grand Theft Auto 4 there are several scenes uncovering the story of Liberty City. In 1609, the area was discovered by Horatio Humboldt and in 1625 a trading post was established by Dutch. At that time it was named New Rotterdam, and it was a place filled with drug-dealers. In 1664, the city was renamed to Liberty City after the England took control of it; until 1783 when the War of Independence finished. After that it became the first capital of United States, in 1790.
