Each of the “friend” NPCs in Grand Theft Auto IV, such as Packie and Brucie, have unlockable abilities, perks, bonuses and benefits that give you various gameplay advantages. As you play the game you will become friends with five different characters, and will then be able spend time with them around Liberty City. The more you spend time doing activities that character enjoys, the more their “like” percentage will increase. For instance, Roman really likes Burger Shot, playing pool and darts, whereas Little Jacob also likes darts and pool, but prefers Cluckin' Bell. When a given character's “like” percentage reaches a certain number, you will unlock that character's special ability. The “like” percentage of each character you are friends with can be viewed from the menu under Stats.

Friend Abilities
- Roman: Cab service – unlocked at 60%
- Little Jacob: Sells you cheap weapons from his car – unlocked at 75%
- Brucie: Helicopter pickup/dropoff – unlocked at 75%
- Dwayne: Sends armed friends to back you up – unlocked at 60%
- Packie: Gives you car bombs whenever you call – unlocked at 75%
