Grand Teton National Park

Part of the Rocky Mountains, Grand Teton National Park is the youngest park in that mountain range. It is located in Wyoming and is surrounded by deep canyons and lakes. Visitors enjoy the spectacular views while driving through the park via Jackson Hole Highway U.S. 89/191 which runs the entire length of the park.

The three Tetons consist of the South, Middle and the Grand. The Teton Range is the focal point of the park and Jackson Hole is the valley where there are the rivers and streams. The Teton Wilderness offers many hiking trails, roaming animals, and a variety of trees and plant life. There are as many as 300 bird species and 17 species of carnivores. While planning your trip, see our pages for Wyoming, Wyoming Outdoors, Yellowstone National Park, and Rocky Mountains.

Activities

There are many activities to choose from with all levels of ability. Check out some of them below:

Backcountry Camping- You can purchase the required permit at Colter Bay and Craig Thomas Discovery and visitor centers and Jenny Lake Ranger Station. If you are climbing or mountaineering and camping overnight during the summer then you need to get your permits at Jenny Lake Ranger Station. All backpackers are required to have bear-proof canisters when camping below 10,000 feet elevation. The park will provide these or you may bring your own approved container. Check the reference for approved containers and bear safety. http://www.nps.gov/grte/planyourvisit/bearsafety.htm

Biking- A popular way to get around the park but there are a few safety rules. You need wear a helmet, ride only on the roads and not on trails, ride in a single file, obey traffic laws as a car does and use hand signals and don't forget to have reflectors for those times with low visibility.

Birdwatching- Most of the birds are migratory and stay from three to six months. Great areas to see birds are: Grandview Point, Christian Pond, Willow Flats, Oxbow Bend, Two Ocean Lake, Cascade Canyon, Taggart Lake Trail, Antelope Flats (Kelly Trail), Menor's Ferry at Moose, Phelps Lake Overlook and Blacktail Ponds Overlook.
