2010 Google April Fools' Day Joke
For the year 2010, Google announced that it had decided to change its name to Topeka.http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/different-kind-of-company-name.html The name change April Fools joke came after Topeka, Kansas announced it would change its official name to "Google". The city of Topeka announced this plan in a bid to sway Google into choosing the city to test their upcoming fiber network.
Google also announced some good and bad ways in which to use the new company name Topeka in a sentence:
- Good: "Before our blind date I did a Topeka search on him."
- OK: "Before our blind date I Topeka'ed him."
- Bad: "Before our blind date I topeka'ed him."
- Horrible: "Before our blind date I topeka'ed him with AltaVista."
Google Hoax History
Google began a tradition of Aprils Fools jokes in 2000 with the pseudo-release of its MentalPlex technology, which would reportedly read the user's brainwaves and eliminate the need to even type in the search request. Most of the jokes are laughable implausible applications or services based partly on real capabilities but poking fun at Google's leadership role in online search.

2007 April Fools' Joke
In 2007 Google reported that they would offer a paper-backup version for users' GMail accounts. Ostensibly, Google appeared as though they would print out every single email in a users' inbox (spam included too) and mail a physical copy to the person. This was humorous because, Google is the last company that the public might expect to offer such a paper-intensive and wasteful program. Google's hoax service that year was called Gmail Paper.
2006 April Fools' Joke
This year, Google's joke was called "Google Romance". The service was said to be a special version of its search engine tailored to single people who might be looking up information about their potential date and/or significant other. As a specialized search service, Google's faux Romance feature was said to be a breakthrough for single people everywhere concerned about who they were dating.
