  • The tradition of Google April Fools Jokes goes back to 2000 when Google announced its new MentalPlex technology, that would read a searcher's brainwaves eliminating the need to type in a search request. The pranks are generally fantastic applications, based on real capabilities but mocking Google's own reputation for being all powerful.

    On April Fools Day 2009, the artificial intelligence program "CADIE" took over Google with her vast knowledge of everything.

    On April 1, 2009, Google users were introduced to "CADIE," an artificial intelligence service with a "mind of her own," using a panda avatar. CADIE was "born" on March 31, 2009, at 11:59 p.m. She was foolproof and incapable of error. CADIE took over all aspect of Google providing "help" to users. This app invented a new rugby-style football that can be plugged into a laptop to record a footballer's progress and help with training issues.     Google's April Fools hoaxes have always been targeted to towards people's intellectual sense of humor. They're generally parodies of existing technology and products and close enough to the actual technology being parodied to make people take a second, and sometimes third, look at the page.

    Iin 2008, Google staged 15 separated April Fools hoaxes. The company enlisted the help of Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson to create video clips and joint press releases about “Virgle” and plans to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars.
