In 1902, Reverend Edgar J. Helms (1863 - 1942) saw an urgent need for clothes and food for the poor residents in a crime infested neighborhood in Boston. He collected cast-offs of the rich Bostonians and repaired them and sold them to the needy residents. This was the beginning of Goodwill Industries, as Helms continued to collect from the wealthy residents and resell the goods to the less fortunate people in the city. Helms wanted to give the poor residents a chance to better their lives in a permanent way through education, training and resources that would benefit them for the rest o their life. Helms received his early education from Cornell College where he earned a Bachelor Degree of Philosophy with the highest GPA ever achieved by a student at the college. After his philosophy degree, Helm studied in Boston and received a Bachelors Degree of Sacred Theology and he later went to London to study the lives of the poverty stricken residents. While he was in London, Helm learned he had been appointed the job of Pastor at a church in Boston. After he and his new bride, Jean Preston, spent a few years in the Boston church the couple moved on a church named Morgan Hill Chapel. This is where the Reverend saw the conditions of the slums in the area and he began collecting food and clothes,, as he had done at the first church in Boston.
