Viggo Mortensen plays John Halder, an affable and hard working family man in 1930's Germany. Halder writes a novel which advocates compassionate euthanasia. The book gains the attention of German political figures working on government propaganda. In a time of fierce nationalism, Halder's views and skills lead him to success in his career and personal life.
