FCC Investigation
During the 2009 broadcast director Darren Aronofsky raised his middle finger to actor Mickey Rourke as the actor gave his acceptance speech for The Wrestler, a film Aronofsky directed. The incident was caught on camera and aired during the telecast (except for the west coast, when the feed cut to black during the event). The FCC investigated the incident.http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/01/breaking-fcc-in.html
History
The first Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held in 1944 at the 20th Century Fox Studios. During the early 1950s, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the decision to establish a special award that recognizes "outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry." The award, first presented to Cecil B. DeMille in 1952, was officially named the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The following year, Walt Disney was the first to receive the newly named honor.http://www.goldenglobes.org/about/
1958 was the first year the Golden Globes were broadcast in a local telecast. Typically the awards had been presented by journalists who were part of the association, but with the advent of the first TV coverage came celebrity presenters Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. The association asked them to present the awards again the following year. Dick Clark Productions has produced the Golden Globes ceremony since 1983.http://www.goldenglobes.org/about/
In 2008, the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards were not telecast in a live ceremony due to the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike.http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/movieawards/goldenglobes/2008-01-07-golden-globes-canceled_N.htm
Globes as Oscar Predictors?
As the Golden Globes are awarded a few months before the Academy Awards, many individuals believe the ceremony can help to predict the Oscar winners. However, only a relatively small percentage of Golden Globe winners have gone on to win Oscars. Furthermore, the awards are selected by very different voting bodies. The Golden Globe winners are determined by a small group of 80 individuals, whereas the Oscars are voted on by thousands of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,236477,00.html
