A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Goiters were more common in the past, resulting from iodine deficiencies. After iodized salt was developed iodine deficient goiters became rare. It is more common that the thyroid would not to produce enough hormones and the pituitary would stimulate it to grow larger causing the development of a goiter.
