Gods and Monsters is a drama film based on the novel Father of Frankenstein by Christopher Bram. The story details the partially fictionalized final days in the life of James Whale, the homosexual director of Frankenstein and other classic films. Whale, played by Ian McKellen, looks back on his life during World War I and his film career. Gods and Monsters was released on November 4, 1998 and co-stars Brendan Fraser and Lynn Redgrave.
