Cee-Lo first hit the music scene as part of the group, Goodie Mob, in the 1990s. He left the group in 1999, after they released their third album. He then set out on a solo career. He released two albums, one in 2002, and the other in 2004. In 2006, his former record label released his greatest hits album.

Danger Mouse has produced for the likes of Gorillaz. The pair met in 2003, when Cee-lo was touring with a show that Danger Mouse was a DJ for. They began working on songs that later became part of the St. Elsewhere album.
