Glyptodon

The Glyptodon was a large armadillo-like mammal that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch. Fossilized remains were found by scientists from Chile working high in the Andes in 2004.

Fast Facts:

  1. Glyptotherium floridanum: "Grooved or carved tooth"
  2. Roughly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle
  3. Became extinct over 10,000 years ago
  4. Shell made up of 1,000-plus inch-thick bony plates
  5. Fossil was found at an unusual elevation of 14,000 feet
