Glenlivet Scotch Whisky comes from the Glenlivet Valley in Scotland. The story of this Scotch began in the early 1800s, when hundreds of illegal distilleries cropped up in this region. The Whiskeys produced here were coveted by the aristocracy and were smuggled to kings and other noblemen. A man named George Smith ran one of these illicit distilling operations.http://www.theglenlivet.com/theglenlivetlegacy/
In 1823, distilling was legalized, and the following year, Smith made his business official by forming a legitimate operation that he called the Glenlivet distillery. Competitors, who had not legalized their operations and were still smuggling their wares, felt threatened by this move and even attempted to take Smith's life. Eventually, these operations faded away and it was proclaimed that only Scotches from Smith's distillery could legally bear the Glenlivet label.http://www.theglenlivet.com/theglenlivetlegacy/

Glenlivet 12 Year Scotch
This video features a tasting of Glenlivet 12 year Scotch, which is referred to as a Speyside Scotch here. The host states that many past distilleries have called themselves Glenlivet, but the one discussed here is the only one that has the legal right to do so. He claims that there are notes of vanilla, pear and grass in the Scotch.
