The show’s dynamic is successful because of how different each one of its lead characters are. Joan is the uptight one of the group and (for most of the show) works as an attorney. Joan tends to watch out for all of the other girlfriends, even though they often do not want her to. Toni is the self-centered, materialistic one who, for most of the show, indulges only herself. This urge is somewhat tamed when she has a child later on. Toni dislikes Maya, because she thinks she is lower class baggage that she shouldn’t have to deal with. Maya is the most working-class out of all the Girlfriends. She is the only one who is both a wife and mother throughout the show. Lynn, who has a white mother and black father, is the artistic, over-educated Girlfriend who isn’t exactly sure what she wants to do with her life (in terms of career). In many episodes, Lynn’s housing situation is questionable and she sometimes lived with Joan. William Jerrowme Dent, the show’s most prominent male character, is a senior partner at the law firm where Joan worked. William and Joan developed a romantic interest in each other, but it never panned out.
