Gillian Welch is a Grammy nominated singer-songwriter with folk and bluegrass influences. Though she was raised in New York and Los Angeles by parents who were television screenwriters, she was fascinated by Appalachian folk music, which became a major influence on her music. Welch met her musical collaborator, David Rawlings, while attending Berklee College of Music, and the pair released their first album, Revival, in 1996. Welch's 2003 release, Soul Journey, has been seen as a stylistic departure, using some rock-based instrumentation and non-traditional song structures.
