The Chicago Born entertainer started her acting career in theatre with work at the National theatre of Great Britain at the Cornell University of Ithaca, in New York. She earned a Bachelor in fine Arts from DePaul University in Chicago.

In 1993, she gained national fame and attention for starring in the hit television show The X-Files with David Duchovny. The series ran for nine seasons and established her as one of the most successful and popular television actresses in history. For her perfomance in 1997 she won an Emmy for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

She has established herself as a versatile leading lady in films such as The House of Mirth with Laura Linney, Playing by Heart with Angelina Jolie, and the Academy Award winning film The Last King of Scotland with Forest Whitaker.

In 2008, she will be seen in the sequel to the film adaptation of The X-Files.
