German School Shooting

  • 17-year-old Timothy Kretschmer killed 16 people on March 11, 2009 in Winnenden, Germany. Kretschmer opened fire at the Albertville-Realschule Winnenden junior high school and killed 10 students and three teachers.     Kretschmer was a former student of the school that graduated in 2008. He lived with his family in a neighboring town where his parents had several licensed firearms in their home. Authorities said the father is a businessman and the family well-off.     Kretschmer reportedly made a warning about the attack in an Internet chat room a few hours before it took place. Police say the discussion might have been a hoax. Kretschmer was reported to have said: "I'm fed up with this bloody life" and "I have got a weapon here and tomorrow I am going to go to my former school and give them hell."
