Gerard Butler Biography
Gerard Butler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but was raised in Paisley, Scotland, which he considers to be his hometown. He attended Glasgow University and became president of the university's law society. Butler received a law degree and began working as a lawyer in Edinburgh, Scotland. However, he was let go from the law firm after missing too much time from work.
He tried his luck at acting instead. His first role was in the stage production of Coriolanus, and later in the stage adaptation of Trainspotting.
Gerard Butler's first leading role in a film was as Dracula in Wes Craven's Dracula 2000. Although the film was a flop at the box office, director Joel Schumacher was so impressed by Butler, he later casted him in the legendary film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, The Phantom of the Opera.
Butler also had major roles in the movies Timeline (2003) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life (2003), but it wasn't until his break-through role as King Leonidas in the movie 300 (2006) that he became recognized worldwide.
