Biography
Gerard Butler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but was raised in Paisley, Scotland, which he considers to be his hometown. Soon after he was born, his parents moved the family to Canada, where he lived until he was two years old. His parents divorced, and his mother took him and his siblings back to Scotland.Gerard Butler attended Glasgow University and became president of the university's law society. Butler received a law degree and began working as a lawyer in Edinburgh, Scotland. However, he was let go from the law firm after missing too much time from work.
He decided that law was not his calling, and tried his luck at acting instead. His first role was in the stage production of Coriolanus, and later in the stage adaptation of Trainspotting.
His film debut was in Mrs. Brown in 1997 where he played Billy Connolly's younger brother. He then had minor roles in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and the Tale of the Mummy (1998).
Gerard Butler's first leading role in a film was as Dracula in Wes Craven's Dracula 2000. Although the film was a flop at the box office, director Joel Schumacher was so impressed by Butler, he later casted him in the legendary film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, The Phantom of the Opera.
Butler also had major roles in the movies Timeline (2003), The Cradle of Life (2003), but it wasn't until his break-through role as King Leonidas in the movie 300 (2006) that he became recognized worldwide.
Since then he has starred in the movies P.S. I Love You (2007) with co-star Hillary Swank, Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla (2008), and The Ugly Truth (2009) with co-star Katherine Heigl. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0124930/bio http://movies.msn.com/celebrities/celebrity-biography/gerard-butler/
