National Basketball Association forward Gerald Wallace plays for the Charlotte Bobcats. He is widely regarded for his impressive athleticism and his spirited, all-out play. He has been injury plagued throughout his career because of his willingness to sacrifice his body for the good of the team. When healthy, he is an explosive force on the offensive end, as well as excellent athletic defender.
Wallace was hospitalized following a collision with Andrew Bynum of the Los Angeles Lakers during a January 27, 2009, game. A chest tube was inserted after tests revealed that 30 to 40 percent of his left lung had collapsed and he had broken a rib. Early Life
Gerald Jermaine Wallace was born in Sylacauga, Alabama, on July 23, 1982. He attended Childersburgh High School, where he was recognized as a McDonald's High School All American and the 2000 Naismith Prep Player of the Year. He would move on to the University of Alabama. In his first season at Alabama, he was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team. He would declare for the NBA draft only after one year in college.
Pro Career
Wallace would be selected with the 25th pick in the 2001 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. He would struggle to make the rotation in the Kings system, but then in the 2004 expansion draft he was selected by the Charlotte Bobcats. He would lead the Bobcats in scoring in 2007, and then sign a six year contract extension to stay with the team. Together with Emeka Okafor and Jason Richardson they form a nice young nucleus to build upon in the future of the young franchise.
