The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team represents the Georgia Institute of Technology in collegiate level football. While the team is officially designated as the Yellow Jackets, it is also appropriately referred to as the Ramblin' Wreck. The Yellow Jackets are a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Georgia Institute of Technology has fielded a football team since 1892 and has an all-time record of 665–446–43. The Jackets play in Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field in Atlanta, Georgia, which has a capacity of 56,680.http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/database/georgiatech_database.htm
The Yellow Jackets are coached by Paul Johnson, who will start his third year as head coach at the school, having compiled a record of 20 wins and 6 defeats in his first two years, including an ACC Championship and a berth in the elite Bowl Championship Series in 2009. In what was the coldest Orange Bowl ever, Johnson's Yellow Jackets were stopped by the University of Iowa Hawkeyes from the Big Ten Conference by a count of 24-14.http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/gamecenter/recap/NCAAF_20100105_IA@GATECH?tag=pageContainer;link
As early as 1904, the Yellow Jackets would reach prominence under the direction of legendary coach John Heisman, for whom the Heisman Trophy is named. This level of success included the famous 1916 game against Cumberland College which Georgia Tech won by the record-setting score of 222-0. The next season, 1917, was the first of four national championships won by Georgia Tech. They would repeat as champions in 1928, 1952 and in 1990.
The Yellow Jackets joined the ACC in 1978 after being an independent school after departing the South Eastern Conference in 1963.http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/database/georgiatech_database.htm The team's series with in-state rival Georgia has produced some memorable contests, and has come to be known as "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate."
Georgia Tech has produced numerous NFL stars, including Calvin Johnson, Drew Hill, Joe Guyon, Clay Matthews, Keith Brooking, Pat Swilling, Marco Coleman, Dorsey Levens and Billy Shaw. Three prominent college head coaches also played their college football at Georgia Tech: Pepper Rodgers, Frank Broyles and Bill Curry.
2010 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football Preview
The Jackets will return fifteen starters from a year ago to try and defend their ACC crown in 2010. Seven of those starters will be on offense, and eight return on the defensive side of the ball. Two of the offensive starters, quarterback Josh Nesbitt and center Sean Bedford were All ACC selections in 2009. Returning your quarterback and a pair of running backs will only help coach Johnson's triple option get even better this season.
The problem for the Yellow Jackets will be defensively. They were porous in 2009, allowing eight of fourteen opponents to tally at least 27 points on the scoreboard. Iowa added 24 of their own in the Orange Bowl, and this is something that will need to be addressed in order to have a successful season and a potential return to a Bowl Championship Series game.http://www.nationalchamps.net/2010/earlybird/teams/georgiatech.htm
