  • History of the Wreck

The history of the football program is well ingrained within the fabric of college football. As early as 1904, the Yellow Jackets would reach prominence under the direction of legendary coach John Heisman, for whom the Heisman Trophy is named. This level of success included the famous 1916 game against Cumberland College which Georgia Tech won by the record-setting score of 222-0. The next season, 1917, was the first of four national championships won by Georgia Tech. They would repeat as champions in 1928, 1952 and in 1990. The Yellow Jackets left the Metro Conference in 1978 to join the ACC. The team's series with in-state rival Georgia has produced some memorable contests, and has come to be known as "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate."
