Georgetown Hoyas Men's Basketball

The Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team plays in the Big East Conference of the NCAA. The team is currently coached by John Thompson III. Notable Hoyas players in the NBA include Patrick Ewing, Allen Iverson, Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo.

In their storied history, the Hoyas have won a record seven Big East Tournament titles, four regular season conference titles, and made five Final Four appearances, including a national championship win in 1984. Georgetown's last appearance in the Final Four was in 2007, when they were ousted by Ohio State.

The Hoyas play a version of the old Pete Carril Princeton offense, which relies on a lot of backdoor cuts to the basket. It is a slower paced offense than usually found in the breakneck pace that some schools favor.

Coach John Thompson III is the son of legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson, who coached the Hoyas from 1981 to 1999 and led the school to its only national championship.

2009-10 Big East Tournament

The Hoyas opened up playing in the Big East Tournament against the University of South Florida on March 10 and dispatched the Bulls 69-49, setting up a third match-up with Syracuse.http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=300690046

Unlike the first two results, the Hoyas knocked off the Orange 91-84 behind a balanced scoring attack. Chris Wright led the way with 29 points, while Freeman had 18, Jason Clark 17 and Monroe chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds. The win propelled Georgetown to the conference semifinals where they would face Marquette.http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=300700183

In the semifinals, Marquette faded in the second half, allowing Georgetown to pull away from a three-point halftime lead to cruise to an 80-57 victory. Monroe led the way with 23 points and 13 rebounds, with Clark and Wright adding 15 apiece. Georgetown would go on to the Big East Championship Game, against West Virginia, where they would ultimately fall by a score of 60-58. The loss foiled their attempt to become just the third Big East team to win the conference tournament by playing four games in four days. The other two teams to do so were the 2006 Syracuse squad and the 2008 Pittsburgh team.http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=300710269 http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=300710269 http://espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=300720277

2010 NCAA Tournament

Fresh off the Big East Tournament, Georgetown was awarded a third seed in the Midwest Region for the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Their first round opponent was fourteenth seeded Ohio University of the Mid-American Conference.

The contest took place on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island, with tip-off at 7:25 pm ET.http://espn.go.com/ncb/preview?gameId=300770046

Ohio however pulled the big upset in the game, winning 97-83 to continue on to play on Saturday, March 20, 2010, against the sixth-seeded University of Tennessee.http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/bracket

2009-10 Georgetown Season

The Hoyas were looking to rebound after a rough 2008-09 campaign that saw them finish with just a 16-15 record, which ended with a 74-72 loss to Baylor University in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament. Included in that lost campaign was a 7-11 record in Big East play, which was followed up by a 64-59 loss to St. John's University in the Big East Tournament.http://espn.go.com/ncb/teams/schedule?teamId=46&year=2009

With another year under their belts, and the all important freshman year out of the way for Greg Monroe, the Hoyas looked to try and rebound in the 2009-10 season.

The Hoyas played a solid non-conference schedule, facing four teams that would qualify for the NCAA Tournament: Temple University, Butler University, the University of Washington and Old Dominion University. Georgetown would win three of those, beating both Butler and Washington on the historic parquet of Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V Classic.http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=293420046http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=293460264 Their lone loss in their non-conference slate was a four point defeat at the hands of Old Dominion on their home floor, 61-57. http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=293530046

Georgetown would win four of their first five Big East contests, and six of their first eight, with the lone losses to Marquette and Villanova. Included in that string were wins over the University of Connecticut and Pittsburgh, both who were ranked in the top fifteen in the nation at the time. http://espn.go.com/ncb/teams/schedule?teamId=46&year=2010

However, they would go on to drop four of their next six Big East games, and six of nine, beginning with a 17 point defeat at the hands of number four Syracuse University. Oddly, after losing to Syracuse, Georgetown came back and beat number seven Duke by a dozen. To further highlight their inconsistent play midseason, they followed the Duke win with a loss to South Florida, then beat second ranked Villanova by 13. Throw in losses to Rutgers, Syracuse again, Notre Dame and West Virginia on March 1, and the Hoyas had dropped to 19-9 overall, 9-8 in the conference. http://espn.go.com/ncb/teams/schedule?teamId=46&year=2010

During this time, the team lost starting guard Austin Freeman as he underwent a battery of tests. It was later determined that he had diabetes, and he returned to the lineup. He missed just one contest, but was ineffective in a couple others, most notably the Notre Dame defeat.

The Hoyas rebounded with a win over the Cincinnati Bearcats to close out the Big East season 10-8 and avoid finishing in the lower half of the conference draw.
