George M. Zinkhan III, a professor of Marketing and Business at the University of Georgia at Athens, is believed to have shot his wife and two other people to death at the Athens Community Theater picnic on Saturday, April 25, 2009. On May 15, 2009, a week after Zinkhan's body was discovered, his son finally stepped forward to claim his remains. Zinkhan will be cremated, and his ashes flown to his son George M. Discovery of Zinkhan's Body
On May 9, 2009, a body was found about a mile from where Zinkhan's abandoned 2005 Jeep Liberty was discovered on May 1. Authorities confirmed that Zinkhan committed suicide and attempted to conceal his own body with foliage in a shallow ditch. Authorities reported on April 27, 2009, that Zinkhan held a plane ticket to the Netherlands dated May 2, 2009, and that they were unable to find his passport. Authorities say that about 12:30 p.m. on April 25, 2009, the Town and Gown Players group were having a homecoming lunch for current and former members. Zinkhan came to the event and got into an argument with an unidentified person.
