Career
George Herriman's career started in 1897 after selling a sketch to the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. He drew some political cartoons and comic strips, but he did not achieve fame until drawing Goosebury Sprig and The Family Upstairs (originally The Dingbat Family) in 1909 and 1910 respectively. In 1913, he created perhaps his most memorable strip, Krazy Kat. The comic featured an unrequited love triangle between its three main characters: smart Officer Pupp, a dog, loves Krazy Kat, a naive cat who loves Ignatz, a conniving mouse who wants nothing to do with Krazy Kat. The strip has since become one of the most popular of its kind.Don Markenstein's Toonopedia: George Herriman
Though Herriman kept his heritage a secret throughout his life, it was revealed that he was born of African descent, despite having light skin. Herriman worked until his death in 1944.
