George Gipp

Notre Dame Football legend George Gipp died December 14, 1920 of pneumonia, just two weeks after being elected the school's first All-American player. The incident inspired coach Knute Rockne's famous "win one for the Gipper" speech.

  2. Gipp was portrayed on film by Ronald Reagan, who used the "Gipper" line during his presidential campaign
  3. Rushed for 2,341 yards and threw for 1,789
  4. Held the Notre Dame career rushing record for more than 50 years
  5. Gipp's body was exhumed in October, 2007 for DNA testing
  6. Also loved baseball, and planned to join the Chicago Cubs after graduation
