Geoffrey Fletcher is the 2010 winner of the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, for his work on Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire. He will next be collaborating with director Doug Liman on a film about the 1971 Attica state prison rebellion.
Life and Career
Fletcher wrote and directed his own films while working in a variety of temporary positions before becoming an adjunct professor at Columbia University and Tisch School of the Arts. Lee Daniels asked Fletcher to adapt the book Push, a novel by Sapphire into the movie which became Precious. Variety has named Fletcher among its "Ten Screenwriters to Watch."
Fletcher graduated from Harvard University and received his masters from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He gained attention for his short films and director John Singleton expressed interest in making a feature from Fletcher's 1996 short "Magic Markers." Success in Hollywood was yet to come, however, and Fletcher worked as a temp, waiting for success as a writer. He is receiving numerous adaptations following his success with Precious, but is hoping to direct an original script that he wrote.http://articles.latimes.com/2009/nov/29/entertainment/la-ca-fletcher29-2009nov29?pg=3

A short clip of Geoffrey Fletcher accepting his Academy Award at the 2010 Oscars. Fletcher seemed rather choked up during his speech - saying the award is for "everybody who works on a dream every day - precious boys and girls everywhere". He also thanked his two brothers, Buddy and Todd, saying they were "his heroes".
