Genetically-Modified Food

Genetically-Modified Food (GM Food) is created from organisms that have had their genomes artificially altered. This can be done for several reasons, such as making crops resistant to insects or tolerant of herbicides. Genetically modified food is the result of Biotechnology and it refers to the technique of using living organisms, or parts of these organisms to modify products and food. Modern medicine and medical treatments, agriculture and other industries use of biotechnology on a grand scale. Biotechnology, such as the use of yeast - to make bread or wine have been around for thousands of years.

The use of yeast used to make bread is a perfect example of ancient biotechnology. Since the late 19th century, farmers have been selecting individual living organisms with favorable characteristics and they developed better crops by combining different species of plants and animals.http://www.greenfacts.org/en/gmo/index.htm#1
