Gene Nichol resigned as president of the College of William and Mary on February 12, 2008, after being told that his contract would not be renewed. Nichol had sparked controversy by decisions such as removing the cross from the campus chapel, to make it more appropriate to secular events and permitting the Sex Workers Art Show on campus.
