Gears of War 2 features 15 multiplayer maps, ten new ones and five classic maps from 2006's Gears of War.
The Maps
Each of the fifteen multiplayer maps has a distinctive look and feel. Some have weather effects, such as the blizzard that sweeps through the Avalanche map. Others take place at different times of day. Each map has its own leaderboard when played in Horde mode.
If a player dies, he can access one of the Battle Cams located at different sites around the map to observe the battle. Of course, Ghost Cam is also available during matches to allow players to roam freely about the map when they die.IGN: Gears of War 2: Final Multiplayer Impressions (October 15, 2008)
Five Classic Maps
Those who purchase a new copy of Gears of War 2 receive a code to download the Flashback Map Pack, which contains five player favorites from the original Gears of War: Canals, Gridlock, Mansion, Subway and Tyro Station. The code is then locked to the player's console and cannot be used twice.Ars Technica: Gears of War 2 features five classic maps, only in new copies (October 3, 2008) These updated maps feature the same gameplay enhancements as the rest of GoW2, such as a tweaked cover system.
Gears of War 2 Maps
Avalanche: Small-scale, symmetrical map set in the midst of a blizzard. Dodge inside the buildings around the central courtyard to escape the impending avalanche.
Blood Drive: This map takes place in an empty hospital.
Day One: A devastated city street is the setting for this multiplayer map, which has no grenades
Hail: This map set by abandoned plain tracks has an alternating weather pattern that adds an interesting twist to the gameplay.
Jacinto: Set in the lush streets of Jacinto, this highly complex map features winding passageways, towers and multiple nooks for a sniper to play in.
Pavilion: This tranquil temple is perfectly symmetrical, giving both teams even footing at the start of the match.
River: Divided in two by a river, this map offers something for those who prefer close combat and those who relish sniping from afar.
Ruins: Narrow corridors and multiple levels add a bit of complexity to this large map set on the Locust home world.
Security: The setting for this map is a prison block, laid out symmetrically around a central courtyard.
Stasis: An empty warehouse and the rainy street below set the stage for a symmetrical map with limited cover, particularly when being fired upon from the catwalk.
