General Electric Company is said to be putting its Louisville, Kentucky-based appliance business on the auction block.

Goldman Sachs Group was chosen by GE to host the auction expecting to fetch $5 to $8 billion.

General Electric Company, or GE as it's commonly known, was formed via a merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1892. GE is the only remaining member of the original 12 listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average to still remain today, 111 years after it first appeared. As of March, 2008, GE is the worlds third largest company.

Goldman Sachs was founded by Marcus Goldman in 1869 and is the largest investment bank in the world as of 2008.
