The Gatherer is a World of Warcraft addon that lets the player track the closest plant, mining node or treasure chest on the mini map. This is not a tracking addon, this is a tool that stores the information as to where the player and his guild mates found previous items and it then records this location on the map as well as the value of the individual herb or mine.
There is also the Gatherer D.B. which is a existing database that is available to import to Gatherer.
This makes the process easier for the miner or the herbalist to find those nodes that have been located once before. When looking for certain ores this will be important because it remember where and which ore was located in the node. There are also the remembered treasure chests that will show up on the mini map when the player gets close.
The Gatherer will have to be uploaded again after patches to accommodate the new information.

World Of Warcraft Addon Review
This is a quick video that shows how the Gatherer looks when it knows where the nodes have already been found in this location. This is not a tracking device, it is a system that retains where the nodes were located and shows the player on the map what is close.
