    Prior to playing professionally, Russell played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the NCAA. Playing only two seasons with the Gophers, he recorded 1,274 total rushing yards on 110 carries, plus 16 receptions for 168 yards to total 19 touchdowns.     Russell joined the NFL by signing as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007. He joined the team for three games that year, recording seven carries for 21 yards.
