  • Gary Roberts is a Canadian born former professional hockey player. He played 21 seasons in the National Hockey League, recently played left wing for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

  • Early Career

    Roberts was drafted out of the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League 12 overall in the 1984 NHL draft by the Calgary Flames. He made his NHL debut during the 1986-87 season with the Flames. In 1989, Roberts helped the Flames win the Stanley Cup Championship. Roberts earned his first of three NHL All-Star Game appearances in 1992. Neck injuries limited his playing time from 1994 to 1996, prompting Roberts to retire from the league completely. He took one season off before returning to the NHL in 1997 with the Carolina Hurricanes.
  • Recent Years

    Roberts continued with the Hurricanes through the 1999-2000 season, then signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was with the Leafs that Roberts played his 1000th NHL game, on January 13, 2004, also earning his third and most recent All-Star selection that year. Roberts took the 2004-05 season off during the NHL Lockout, then signed with the Florida Panthers. He served as an alternate captain for the Panthers before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 27, 2007. In June of 2008, Roberts was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
