Gary Matthews Sr. was drafted out of high school by the San Francisco Giants in 1968. He made his major league debut with the Giants on September 6, 1972.Baseball Almanac: Gary Matthews Stats Matthews played with the Giants until 1977, then played for the Atlanta Braves through the 1980 season. The next three seasons were spent playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.
