Garth Ennis is a popular Irish comic book writer. He is known for his work on DC Comics' Vertigo imprint book Preacher and Marvel Comics' The Punisher.
Ennis is known for his use of black humor and extreme violence. His frequent artistic collaborators include Glenn Fabry, Carlos Ezquerra, John McCrea and Steve Dillon, with who he co-created The Preacher.
He began his comic book writing career in 1989 with the series Troubled Souls for the British anthology series Crisis. His first American work was for DC Comics' title Hellblazer, which he wrote from 1991 to 1994. It was through his work on Hellblazer that he met artist Steve Dillon. Dillon and Ennis published the first Preacher comic in 1995. The 66-issue epic was a critical success and is currently being adapted into a television series for HBO.
Ennis' work in the 2000s has included The Boys, Midnighter, Chronicles of Wormwood and Seven Brothers with director John Woo.
