Garter belts are a great accessory that are both functional and fashionable. The purpose of the garter belt is to hold up thigh-high stockings such as the ever popular fishnet stockings. It is an article of clothing that fits around the waist or hips, depending on the variety and has four adjustable straps with fastening attachments at the ends, which hook onto the stockings of your choice. They are typically sold at lingerie stores, novelty stores and are sometimes carried in lingerie sections of other clothing stores as well.
In the twentieth century, they were invented only for function as both men and women more stockings, and the only way to keep them in place was to have them held up by attaching them to garter belts. In the 1920's the garter belt began it's role in fashion as an accessory for the flappers, as it only added to the ever so scandalous fashion of the time.
Betty Paige, Katy Perry, Denise Fraser and Rhianna seem to all be fans of the garter belt-stocking combo, as they have all been known to make these articles visible in public by wearing short enough dresses and skirts to show off the straps as well. The trend is once again spreading like wildfire as it did in the 1920's, as there has been a considerable increase in the sales of both of these products in the last six to twelve months. Some women, however will not use these as a fashion statement, and because of that, the sales of them have always been steady as they are sometimes strictly for home uses and functionality rather than the fun, sexy fashion add on. They have also always been a hit with gothic girls and women, as the vintage look seems to, with all of the dark clothing and makeup, give them an appearance of the undead or the immortal.
