Garry Kasparov, a vocal critic of current Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and former grandmaster chess champion, has been sentenced to five days in prison for leading an opposition protest. The rally drew thousands of people at the Kremlin on November 25, 2007 in protest of the current presidency. Kasparov was beaten and arrested by riot police who have testified that they were given direct orders to detain the presidential hopeful.
