  • Early Life

    Garret Joseph Anderson was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 30, 1972. He attended Kennedy High School. In 1990, Anderson was selected by the the California Angels in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.MLB.com: Garret Anderson
  • Pro Career

    On July 27, 1994, Anderson made his MLB debut with the Angels. In his first full season in the Majors, Anderson appeared in 106 games with 16 home runs and 69 runs batted in. He was also the runner up for the Rookie of the Year award that season, losing to Marty Cordova.
  • Earning Star Status

    In 2002, he was selected for his first of three MLB All-Star Games and was a member of the the World Series championship squad that defeated the San Francisco Giants in 7 games. Anderson was selected for the American League Silver Slugger Award that year and came in fourth for MLB Most Valuable Player voting. He continued his success in 2003, earning another All-Star nod, the Silver Slugger Award, the MVP of the All-Star Game and the winner of the Home Run Derby contest during All-Star weekend. Anderson missed playing time in 2004 after chronic injuries forced him to sit out. He played in only 112 games that year. He returned to the Angels line up in 2005, where he earned his third All-Star selection.   • 2008 Free Agency

    On October 28, 2008, the Angels exercised a three million dollar buyout on Anderson's contract. The deal makes Anderson a free agent. The Angels had 15 days to deal exclusively with Anderson, then after will have to compete for Anderson's services in the open market.     On November 5, 2008, Anderson spoke publicly for the first time since the Angels declined his contract. Anderson stated he was surprised by the team's decision stating, "The reason I was a little surprised they didn't pick up my option is I produced. I had a very good season, especially considering how it started. You look at what the market is, and the $11 million is pretty fair market value for my performance. I've been consistent, and I haven't declined." Anderson has spent his entire 14-year career with the Angels.     On December 29, 2008, news agencies reported that free agent Garret Anderson has received interest from several Major League Baseball teams including the Oakland Athletics and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Angels have not shown any desire to re-sign Anderson after inking outfielder Juan Rivera.
