The Garibaldi-Lopez drug gang has been trafficking illegal drugs from Mexico through the Arizona border into the United States. In a drug bust that took place on December 22, 2008, authorities believe they have broken up the gang and destroyed its network. The gang has been credited with smuggling up to 200 tons of marijuana into the country each year.Reuters: U.S. police bust Mexican drug gang... (December 23, 2008)
Background
It was in 2007 that law enforcement agencies began to realize that smaller drug busts that were taking place might be related. As they investigated, they discovered a network spanning from the Mexican border to Phoenix, Arizona. Using stolen cars and installing communication towers in the desert, the network developed several routes through Indian reservations and established "safe" locations along the way. After further investigation, federal custom's agents believe the group is associated with the Sinaloa Cartel of Mexico.AZCentral.com: Major drug-smuggling operation ... (December 23, 2008)-
