History of Gap Kids

The original Gap was founded in 1969 by Doris and Don Fisher. It was opened as a very small, single store in Ocean Avenue, San Francisco with the intention of being an easy place to shop that possesses a lot of variety in styles and sizes. The couple were constantly buying old hotels and restoring them so that they could be in use again. They bought one such hotel and rented a room to a Levi's salesman, which is what gave them the initial idea of selling clothes. In the first Gap store, they primarily sold jeans and also sold vinyl records.http://www.ceo-watch.com/doris-and-don-fisher-gaps-ceo.html

Gap Kids wasn't opened up until 1986, around the same time that Gap stores started coming to European countries. Baby Gap came about in 1990, starting in an established Gap Kids store in San Fransisco.http://www.gapinc.com/public/About/abt_milestones.shtml

How the Clothes are Made

There are several necessary steps in making clothes for Gap Inc.

  • Step 1 - Design: There are people who work with designers coming up with the ideas before the clothes can even be made.
  • Step 2 - Plan: This is the technical part. The necessary amount of the new piece of clothing must be decided on, and someone needs to figure out what resources to buy for the project.
  • Step 3 - Production: This is where the factory workers actually make the clothes.
  • Step 4 - Distribution: All the clothes get packed up and shipped to specific stores, ready to be sold.
  • Step 5 - Analysis: The monitoring of weekly sales. This lets everyone know which stores need more of which pieces of clothing.http://www.gapinc.com/public/About/abt_howourclothesaremade.shtml
