The
Ganges is one of the longest rivers in the world. It's main source is the
Gangtori Glacier in the
Himalayas.
The basin is the most densely populated and agriculturally productive. Snow capped mountains keeps the water sizable year round, but the monsoons in summer can cause destructive flooding in the delta region.
Major pollution in the river comes from the leather industries that have sprung up along river, with the discharge of chromiums and other chemicals. It is still considered sacred by Hindus in
India.
